I got this check for over 300 Dollar for no reason which looks like some kinda free school money ("disbursement") but I never did apply for anything like that so I think it is a mistake on their side. Will their be any problems if I go and cash this check? What are the legal regulations for this? Thanks.
What happens if I cash a check that has been sent to me from my college that I shoulnt have gotten?
First if its a mistake they will want the money back and will have a legal right to reclaim it. I have heard instances where months later, cash was electronically debited from an account. There is no such thing as "free" money. Cash it and put in your savings account in case they find out about the mistake.
So in that light, since you suspect its not really yours, call the school and ask them about it.
Reply:Don't ask us, ask the college. If you cash it and it was a mistake you will be liable for the money. Required to pay it back. If you cash it and spend it you may have a hard time repaying it. Especially if money is tight now. It could make it hard for you to get your grades and or transcript. Go to the office that sent it to you, and ask them. If it is yours to keep, save it for something important.
Reply:You answered your own question, you said you didnt apply for the check and think it is a mistake. If you cash it, that would indicate you are fully aware that it was a mistake so it would be considered some type of fraud.
If they dont press charges, you will have to pay it back. Maybe you should just ask the school, maybe your parents over paid on something.
