How do you know if your petty cash box matches your books?

I replaced a lady at my job and I am trying to make sense of what she did, blah, blah, blah. Now I want to reconcile the petty cash box b/c I have used it. But I before I used it, i counted up all the money in the box and cut a check for petty cash. That has been well over a year now and several replenshings, now I need to reconcile.

How can I do that correctly?

How do you know if your petty cash box matches your books?
compute the sum of all the receipts, then add the total to the amount of the remaining cash.

the grand total should be equal to the petty cash fund account estalished in the books.
Reply:SImpley compare the withdrawals (receipts) with the deposits and hopefully the sum of hte two eaqual the amount in the box when you took it over.
Reply:did you keep all the receipts that you got when you bought stuff with the petty cash money? you add up all of your receipts and subtract them from the total amount of the petty cash check...and then turn in all of the receipts with a record of the deductions on it..i usually type one up on the computer with the starting balance and then list a description of what I spent and subtract the amount off the balance.
