How long can I wait to cash in a check at a bank?

I just started working about a week ago and I'm 17. Well, I'll be 18 in Dec.5th so, that's when I'll go in to the bank nearest to me and get a bank account. Can I wait that long to cash the check, or is there a time limit or anything on doing so?

Normally they are not void until 1 year unless it says something different on the check. When you open your checking accont tell the bank you are going to college and you may be able to get free checking.
Reply:There is really no time limit on cashing a payroll check. Yes you can wait that long since you will be 18 and you can open an account in your name.
Reply:a year
Reply:Most payroll checks are good for 90 days so you should be OK. However, I would never hang on to any check for very long. Anything could happen, like bankrupcy.

Happy Birthday by the way.

Peace.
Reply:Usually 6 months.
Reply:It's 6 months....but I never heard of this. I opened a bank account when I was 15...when I had my first job.

You can open a bank account at your age.....there should not be any problem.
Reply:Checks are good for sixty days from the date of issuance, meaning the date written on the check. This is my opinion based on experience.

Why don't you get a checking account now? I don't think you have to be I8 to get one. Further, if you can go to the bank that the check was drawn on you can cash it there.

You can sign the check over to a trusted friend or relative and they can cash it for you. In other words you endorse the check and they give you the money. Don't do this unless they are willing to hand you the cash at the time you sign it or if they go to the bank with you and hand you the cash at the time you are in the bank. An endorsed check is like cash so if you lose it, it is like losing cash.

If I were you I would go to a reputable bank or credit union and try to open an account and talk over practices involving checks and banking.
Reply:I'm not real sure if checks "expire" unless there is a specific statement that says they are void if not cashed within a certain period of time. You could cash the check and stash the cash somewhere until you turn 18 if you are worried about it. By the way, Happy Birthday early.
Reply:You can not cash it before the date on the check. That's the only limit I am aware of.
Reply:Look carefully at the check and see if it says anywhere that it must be cashed within "x" days (30 or 60 or 90 usually). If not you have up to six months. But, you culd open up an account before you turn 18. Legally, you can have access to your money at age 14.
Reply:A cheque is normally valid for six months from the date of the cheque, after which, the cheque is considered a ‘stale cheque’.

Since you just started working a week ago and you'll be 18 in a few weeks I can't see why this would be a problem unless your employer is bankrupt at the time when the cheque is processed.

Note: This answer is based on what I know from the UK. Double check with your potential bank.
Reply:Usually the check will say valid for xx amount of days, it will say how long on the check. I would check with the bank to see how long the check is good for. My daughter is 16 and has her own account, you may check with the bank to see if you can start an account now, but the check should be good until Dec 5th.
