How long do you have to cash a personal check?

How long do people have to cash a check?

How long do you have to cash a personal check?
My bank (Wachovia) is 90 days. Also, their cashiers checks/teller checks are only valid for up to 90 days from the date written.

If you have an old check from someone, contact that bank and ask them about their policies. If it's more than 1 year old, you just just about guarantee it won't go through.
Reply:it can vary based on the bank from 90 days to 2 years. Contactyour bank or the bank that the check is written from and determine their policy.
Reply:There is no law that restricts the amount of time to cash a check. As you can see from the other answers it is up to the bank you are dealing with. Many banks will not accept a check drawn from another bank if it rather old, since they consider that there is an increased liklihood that the check will be returned because they cannot verify availability of funds.
Reply:Most banks will honor them for at least 90 days.
Reply:I never knew that they expired.
